Free TON is a peer-to-peer multi-blockchain system with the native TON Crystal (TON) token. The Free TON platform is built on the TON protocol, which was developed by Nikolay Durov and the Telegram team.

Free TON launched the Free TON Community of over 5000 companies and individuals. Among the active representatives of the community are the developer of applied solutions for the Durov brothers' blockchain company TON Labs, investment companies Dokia Capital and Bitscale Capital, Kuna exchange, Everstake, Chorus, Bitscale Capital, Anatoly Kaplan.

The launch took place on May 7, 2020. Simultaneously with the launch of TON, Labs published on GitHub the main components of the TON OS operating system, end-to-end infrastructure for working with the Free TON blockchain.

  • Implementation of a full TON node in Rust;
  • Command-line interface;
  • Smart contract TON Multisignature Wallet;
  • scripts and dock containers for running TON validators.

The reason for the launch of Free TON was the refusal of Pavel Durov's team to launch the TON blockchain platform.

The Declaration on Decentralization (DOD), which is actually the whitepaper of the project, says that Telegram can no longer participate in the development of TON due to litigation with the SEC. However, the TON ecosystem already has millions of lines of code created by the community, and this work should not be in vain, the authors summarized.

To avoid SEC claims, the Free TON community renamed the project and the name of the cryptocurrency. According to the signatories, the launch was not discussed with the Telegram team and TON investors. US residents are prohibited from signing the Declaration.

Durov did not forbid TON Labs to use the name of their blockchain project and position itself as a technology partner of TON. According to the Declaration, the mission of Free TON is to promote the values of the free market, personal data protection, decentralized governance, censorship resistance, and cooperation around the world.
